IMG 3068Kidsafe Victoria's 'Safe Barriers Save Lives' campaign was launched last week at MSAC with our very own CEO Chris Samartzis fronting the media and speaking out about the importance of pool and spa safety in Victoria.

SPASA Victoria is pleased to be partnering with Kidsafe Victoria again this year as this important campaign promotes the safe use of backyard pools and spas and helps ensure that pool and spa owners have checked that their barriers are safe and in good working condition for the upcoming swimming season.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Australian children under 5 years of age and backyard swimming pools are the most common location where these incidents occur. Evidence suggests that a large number of drowning deaths in pools are as a result of fencing that is faulty or non-compliant with Australian Standards.

Common pool barrier non-compliance issues include:

  • Gates that don’t self-latch or self-close
  • Climbable objects in the ‘non climbable’ zone outlined in the Australian Standards (eg pot plants, chairs, pool pumps near the pool fencing which could allow a child to climb over the fence)
  • Excess space under the fence or gate
  • Misuse (eg propping the pool gate open)
Campaign materials will soon be available for FREE to our members. You can help educate and protect your customers by display these posters and flyers in your shops. Pool and spa safety is an issue of ethics and reputation for our industry, so please join us as we help make our industry safer and more enjoyable for all!

Please also remember that Australian Standard AS1926.1 - Swimming Pool Safety - Safety barriers for swimming pools is currently open for public comment. Come along to our special industry member session and have your say on the changes. You can register for this important industry member event HERE.

The PoolPools are a defining part of our national identity.

Evoking deep nostalgia and childhood memories, this two-part documentary takes a look at the Australian identity through the prism of the pool.

Narrated by Richard Roxburgh, this fantastic documentary includes interviews with Christos Tsiolkas, Myf Warhurst, Matthew Mitcham and Hannah and Eliza Reilly and follows the evolution of the swimming pool in Australia demonstrating how pools have been integral in crossing gender, religious and cultural divides that have brought communities together.

Prefabricated concreteA guide on the safe use of prefabricated concrete elements in the construction industry is now available on the Safe Work Australia website.

Prefabricated concrete, also known as precast concrete, is a concrete element that is manufactured somewhere other than its final place of installation. Prefabricated concrete includes wall elements, columns, beams, flooring, bridge beams and flooring and façade units. Due to their size and mass, prefabricated concrete elements can be vulnerable to uncontrolled collapse which can cause workers and others to be seriously injured or even killed.

The Guide to managing risk in construction : prefabricated concrete provides national guidance material for duty holders in the building industry on managing risks and work health and safety (WHS) duties associated with working with prefabricated concrete.

The use of precast, tilt-up and concrete elements in both building and civil construction has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it is important to be aware of the WHS risks associated with this type of high-risk work. Since 2003, there have been ten workplace fatalities caused by precast, tilt-up and concrete elements. Four of these fatalities occurred at civil construction sites, and three occurred in building construction sites.

For specific information on prefabricated concrete in your state or territory contact your local WHS regulator.

NSW DroughtParts of regional NSW could run out of water as early as November as the state faces a drought of "unprecedented proportions".

Projections from the state's river operator and bulk water supplier WaterNSW have revealed the worst-case scenario for NSW if there's no significant rainfall or government intervention. Under the worst-case scenario, the first towns to lose water supply will be Dubbo, Cobar, Nyngan and Narromine in November when the Macquarie River is forecast to run dry.

The Macquarie River experiences an average inflow of 1448GL annually but in the past two years has seen just 97GL enter the river system, data seen by AAP shows. It's been described as a "critical" situation by NSW Water Minster Melinda Pavey, who says the government is doing "everything humanly possible" to support communities.

"NSW was awash with water in 2016 and it's bone dry right now. It's resulting in unprecedented pressures not only on farmers but now on town water supplies," Ms Pavey told reporters in Canberra on Sunday. "This is a drought of unprecedented proportions."
